Rinse Instructions PDF Print E-mail

  1. Remove Paper
    • Make a small tear in the edge of the fabric. Only the paper will tear, not the fabric.  Pull the fabric off the paper.
  2. Prepare your Rinse
    • Make a mixture of tap water at roomtemperature with liquid fabric softener.Use 4 tablespoons per cup of water.  I have had good luck with Snuggle Brand and All Brand softener.  Stay away from softeners that have special additives.
  3. Containers
    • Use a container large enough to lay the fabric flat.  You may use plastic, metal, or glass.  The same solution can be used until the solution has a color change.  You can store the mixture for future use.
  4. Rinse!
    • Drop the fabric in face down.
Place it in all at once.  If it
appears to float, push it down
      with your fingers.
  5. Count!
    • Lift the fabric out of the solution within 15 seconds. Swish it a tiny bit to push the excess dye floating in the water away from the fabric. Don't let the fabric fold back on itself. Lay your fabric face down on a soft terry cloth. Fold back the towel. Blot to remove the excess moisture.
  6. Dry
    • Open the towel right away.  If  you see the ghost of the image, don’tworry.  It is the excess dye.  Remove from the towel.  Lay on a flat, clean surface to dry, or microwave for about 1 minute, or blow with a hair dryer.
  7. The Results!
    • Your Image should look as good, or better after the wetting process.  The purposes for the rinse are:
      • remove the excess dye
      • remove the chemical
      • pre-shrink your fabricd. restore the hand to the silks

If you are making wall hangings or items that will never be washed, you do not need to rinse the fabric!

Each printer companies's inks have unique qualities.  Not all inks perform the same on the fabric.

  • HP printers yield bright colors on all the cottons and silks.  Their magenta is harder to hold and adds  a color shift.  These are best hand washed.
  • Epson UltraChrome, UltraBrite, or DuraBrite have the least color shift and are the most washfast.  They can be machine washed gently.
  • Epson Photo dyes can only be used for projects that will not get wet.
  • Lexmark printers yield bright prints with stable colors on all fabrics.  Hand wash for best results.
  • Canon printers yield bright images on cottons and most silks.  Hand washing only.   Large format images usually do not require rinsing.
  • Scotch-Gard can be added as protection.
